This week, a model takes the operator's call.
Two of the three stories are the same story wearing different clothes. At Arauco's mills a Raute analyzer decides which defect on a panel gets patched; at Ponsse's new Refactory a model decides which worn part is worth keeping. Both are jobs that used to live in one person's eye, made a few thousand times a shift, each call small enough that nobody thought to write it down. That is exactly where this kind of automation lands first: the dull, repeated calls, long before the dramatic ones.
The interesting question is what happens to that judgment once it leaves the operator. When a call becomes data, it can be measured, audited, and slowly improved. Whose hands that data ends up in is the thing worth watching.

Arauco orders Raute's AI panel graders for two Chilean mills
Arauco has ordered Raute's Panel Visual Analyzer R7 for the repair lines at two Chilean plywood mills, delivery set for late 2026. It pairs machine vision with deep-learning models that find the defects in each panel and tell the line which ones to patch, the call an operator made by eye. Raute calls the technology production-proven on lines already installed. No order value was disclosed.
Ponsse puts AI on the teardown of used forest machines
The €5 million Refactory in Iisalmi, 60% funded by the EU's LIFE programme, takes in worn harvesters and forwarders and strips them for parts. What decides a component's fate is a model for maintenance prediction and routing, and the parts it clears go onto a digital marketplace for remanufactured components. Ponsse reused 222 tonnes of parts this way in 2025, before the plant is even built.
FireSat's first three satellites reach orbit
The constellation we flagged in #053 has started going up. Muon Space placed the first three operational FireSat satellites in orbit on 7 July, each carrying custom infrared sensors built to spot a fire about five metres across and hand the read to Google's models. Earth Fire Alliance is building toward more than 50 satellites, enough to check every point on Earth roughly every 20 minutes.
